If you are a wood collector or woodworker, pull over next time you see a large pile of sawdust and smell wood smoke. Some time ago while driving up in Western North Carolina, I stopped to investigate such a scene, and what I found was a large portable band saw lumber mill, a large log yard stocked with a variety of wood species, and a very talented local sawyer and woodworker.

Hello Woodworking World!

We’ve got another great monthly edition of the Wood News Online available for you to read, and we’re pretty excited about this one.

This month we’ve got a great article about a sawyer and woodworker from Western North Carolina who works with a portable bandsaw lumber mill that allows extremely large cuts – up to 32 inches in diameter, in some cases!

Gary Smith demonstrates some incredible carving abilities with his horse drawn carriage in our Show Us Your Woodcarving column, and Alex Entelis builds unique and beautiful kids’ toys in our Show Us Your Stuff column. We also feature Bob McConnell’s “Volunteer Workshop” in our Show Us Your Shop column.

Morton’s got the new T18 Festool drill in his workshop for a product tour, the Down to Earth Woodworker experiments with a new design for storing his clamps before committing several random acts of woodworking, and the Lie-Nielsen hand tool giveaway is now open for entries!

All this and more are ready for you to check out in this month’s Wood News. Go take a look!

Congratulations to Highland Woodworking’s own chip carving instructor, Mickey Hudspeth, who just got back from the Smoky Mountain Woodcarving Festival, where he took 1st and 2nd places in the chip carving category.

Mickey’s chip carving work has already been awarded numerous times, including the same festival in 2010, where he received first, second and third places in the category for his submitted works.

We are proud to have such a renowned expert teaching our Chip Carving class here at Highland – if you want to learn from the best, sign up for Mickey’s Introduction to Chip Carving Class on December 3rd!

Howdy Woodworkers,

This year, Highland Woodworking is proud to sponsor The Wood Whisperer’s charity build. Marc Spagnuolo and a whole host of woodworkers around the country are building rocking horses for a great cause: Woodworkers Fighting Cancer. And even better, you can combine this build for a great cause with a great gift you can give for the holidays!

Highland Woodworking, The Wood Whisperer and a number of other businesses and individuals will be donating to the cause for every woodworker who completes one of the rocking horses. The deadline for building the rocking horse is Monday, November 14th, so this weekend would be a great time for you to get started. The downloadable plan for the rocking horse is free and linked from The Wood Whisperer website, and Marc has posted a couple videos he made while putting the project together. You can view them here:

Hello Woodturning World,

Take a look at the newest edition of The Highland Woodturner!

This month we’ve got another new column from Curtis Turner, who turns a bowl and provides step by step explanation so you can do it yourself at home. Time to get started on your gift list!

We’ve also got a great article from Terry Chapman on visiting the Moulthrop woodturning exhibit at the Marietta-Cobb museum, including a slideshow that highlights the impressive works he got to see in person.

We’re also featuring wood turnings by George Davis in our Show Us Your Woodturning column, and a great tip from woodturner Phil Colson on using card scrapers to clean up small imperfections on turned pieces.

Take a look at all this plus a few great turning products, including the Oneway Sit Down Lathe, and you’ve got this month’s Highland Woodturner! Enjoy!
