We are excited to announce that we can now sell and ship the SawStop Contractor Saw to our customers nationwide within the lower 48 states.

Sawstop’s brake design is well known for its unique ability to instantly stop and retract the blade upon any contact between the sawblade and your skin.

You can see a good Southern SawStop demonstration below from Roy Underhill’s last visit to Highland:

And check out this video that explains SawStop’s unique technology in more depth:

Charles Brock and Michel Auriou both enjoyed the marketplace at Woodworking in America this year and Matt Vanderlist caught them on video talking about the origins of Auriou Rasps and how Chuck uses the rasps and rifflers in the building of his sculptured rockers. The video even includes a demonstration from Michel actually creating a rasp by hand as well as Chuck using one to round the legs of one of his chairs. Take a look at it here!

The Down to Earth Woodworker, Steve Johnson, has been busy this year. Back in January he gave us a video tour of his current shop, and then shared the news that he would soon be vacating the temporary space and building a new workshop by converting the garage of the house he recently purchased. Steve documented the process with this great series of videos, starting with his ideas about how to improve a workspace and make it most optimal for him and finishing with a brand new video, showing Steve actually moving into the new Down to Earth Workshop after the conversion is completed and giving us a personal tour! Sit back and enjoy watching Steve create his dream shop, and maybe even pick up an idea or two for your own current or future shop conversion!

And if you still can’t get enough Down to Earth Woodworker, or you prefer written word to videos, you can check out Steve’s column for this month here.

My name is Andrew Sawyer. Since I picked up the hobby of woodworking about 7 years ago, I have begun (as many of us have) filling my house with furniture.

The wood slicer is the finest blade I have ever put on my bandsaw, but none of that matters if the machine it is on is dirty and out of whack!

Here’s a step-by-step tutorial on cleaning, tuning up and maintaining your bandsaw, so your Wood Slicer will be able to do its best work.

We had a chance to sit down with the winner of our Stanley Sweetheart Hand Tool Sweepstakes, Jan Tankersley, and ask her a few questions. In our recent giveaway, Jan won three Stanley Sweetheart planes: the No. 60-1/2 Low Angle Block Plane, the No. 4 Smooth Plane and the No. 62 Low Angle Jack Plane, as well as a Set of 8 of the new edition Stanley Sweetheart Socket Chisels AND Highland’s own European Workbench. Here’s what she had to say:

On entering the Stanley Sweetheart Giveaway, and her own woodworking:

“I have always wanted to get into woodworking. However, I do not have a shop of my own. Last year I bought a couple of chisels for my brother, who is a woodworker, and I signed up for your newsletter. Earlier this year I saw you had this contest. I figured I was dreaming, but I thought about how great it would be if I could win that prize.”

“My ultimate dream is to have a shop of my own where I can do woodworking and pottery.”

On winning the giveaway, and her plans for the prize:

“I was very, very excited when I won. I’ve been trying to make up my mind if I’m going to keep the prize completely for myself or let my brother have it. For now since I don’t have my own shop, I’ll let my brother use the tools, but if I ever get my own shop going, I may want them back. Who knows what that might bring about!”
